Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, health care providers and health care facilities are required to inform individuals who are not enrolled in a plan or coverage or a Federal health care program, or not seeking to file a claim with their plan or coverage both orally and in writing of their ability, upon request or at the time of scheduling health care items and services, to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of expected charges.
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost
Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
1. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
2. Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
3. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
4. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises

At your first therapy session, you'll need to have completed the required intake paperwork through our secure online Client Portal. Once your initial appointment is scheduled, you’ll receive an email with a link to access the portal and complete your intake packet.
The intake packet typically includes:
Personal and contact information
Medical and mental health history
Consent for treatment
Practice policies and procedures
HIPAA privacy notices
Financial agreements or insurance information (if applicable)
Please note that all forms must be completed prior to your first session in order for it to proceed.
If you're attending couples or family counseling, each participant must complete a separate intake packet. If you have limited access to a computer or the internet, please let us know—we’ll work with you to find an alternative way to complete the necessary documents.
Providing Proof of Guardianship for Counseling Services with a Minor
If services are being rendered to a minor child (under the age of 18), the legal guardian will be required to provide appropriate documentation to verify guardianship. This ensures that we are ethically and legally permitted to provide care, and that the individual giving consent has the legal authority to do so.
At the time of intake, we kindly ask that the guardian provide:
A valid photo ID of the legal guardian
The minor child’s Social Security card or birth certificate
Legal documentation demonstrating guardianship
Examples of acceptable proof of guardianship include:
A divorce decree or custody agreement specifying legal custody
Adoption papers
Letters of guardianship issued by a court
Court order assigning legal custody or conservatorship
Foster care placement paperwork from a licensed agency
Power of attorney documents (in certain cases, with court approval)
This documentation is critical for protecting the rights of the child and ensuring that services are being initiated and consented to by the appropriate legal decision-maker. It also helps us remain compliant with state laws, professional counseling ethics, and HIPAA regulations.
If you have questions or are unsure whether your documentation meets the requirements, please contact us—we’re here to help you navigate the process with care and clarity.
We look forward to supporting you on your journey.

At Counseling with a Purpose, our primary goal is to support your mental health and well-being through a therapeutic relationship built on trust and confidentiality. Please be aware that our therapists do not participate in legal proceedings such as custody battles, divorce hearings, disability hearings, or court testimonies.
While we strive to support you in every way clinically appropriate, we are not forensic experts and cannot provide legal opinions, attend court as witnesses, or participate in legal disputes.
However, in the rare event that a therapist is subpoenaed or otherwise compelled by law to become involved in legal matters, the following policy will apply:
A retainer of $1,000 is due in advance. If a subpoena or notice to meet with attorneys is received without a minimum of 48-hour notice, there will be an additional $250 “express” charge. If the case is reset with less than 72 business hours’ notice, the client will be charged $500 (in addition to the $1,000 retainer).
These fees reflect:
The time spent away from clinical responsibilities
The emotional labor and preparation required for legal testimony
The impact on our therapists’ schedules and availability to other clients
The potential compromise to the therapeutic relationship
We appreciate your understanding and encourage clients to seek the appropriate legal or forensic professionals for matters involving the court system.

Your first therapy session is an important step toward self-discovery and healing, and it's completely natural to feel a mix of curiosity, hope, and maybe even a little nervousness.
During this initial session, your therapist will work with you to understand what brought you to therapy—whether that’s stress, relationship issues, anxiety, grief, or something else entirely. Together, you'll discuss your concerns, goals, and what you hope to gain from the process. You’ll also go over important details such as confidentiality, the structure of future sessions, and what a therapeutic relationship looks like.
This session is mostly conversational and centered around creating a comfortable, judgment-free space where you can feel heard and supported. There’s no pressure to dive too deeply before you’re ready.
Ideally, sessions are held weekly in the beginning to help build momentum and trust. As you make progress, your therapist may recommend spacing sessions out to every other week or monthly. While everyone’s journey is unique, many individuals begin to notice meaningful changes within 6 to 10 weeks, and couples typically within 10 to 18 weeks, depending on their goals and level of engagement.
At Counseling with a Purpose, we’re here to help good people get through hard times—one honest conversation at a time.
If you have any more questions or would like help preparing for your first appointment, we’re happy to support you.
